Medicare Advantage Dental Coverage Explained

  • All dental coverages are not the same.
  • Some plans cover implants, others do not.
  • Some dental coverages are a reimbursement, meaning you pay out of pocket, get an itemized copy of the bill, mail it in, and wait 6-8 weeks for the reimbursement up to the maximum coverage amount that the plan provides.
  • Some plans require that you pay a co-pay for each service.
  • Some plans separate the dental maximum coverage amount into 4 disbursements (quarterly). For example, if the plan offers $4,000 in coverage, you will get $1,000 first quarter, $1,000 to use second quarter, $1,000 to use third quarter, and $1,000 in the fourth. The amounts generally do roll over.
  • Some plans give you a maximum amount, and you do not have to pay anything out of pocket until you’ve exhausted the dental maximum coverage amount given.
  • Other plans require that the member pays a percent and the company pays a percent until the maximum coverage amount has been reached.

Why All the Confusion When Calling Dental Offices to Set an Appointment for Those That Have Medicare Advantage Plans?

This happens because many Medicare Advantage plans use a third party to handle the dental coverage. For example, if a member and the dental office are not familiar with how Medicare Advantage plans work and the member calls to set an appointment, the dental office may tell the member that they do not accept the insurance, when in fact they do. They do accept the third party; however, if the member has not been educated on it and how to state the name of the dental coverage they have to the dentist, then they may never get the dental services that they so desperately need.
